01

Indicative Valuation

A quick, lower-cost range for owners deciding whether to sell, how to answer an approach, or what a retiring co-owner's share might be worth, while the number stays inside the business. Intended for internal decision-making; it is not a certified opinion for lenders, courts or the ATO.

"A valuation proves its worth on the day someone tries to take it apart. Whether that is a buyer's adviser, the bank, the ATO or a barrister for the other side, every report we sign for a Hobart owner is written to come through that test intact."

Tasmania's business base is small and often family-owned, so a valuation tends to land at a delicate point: a parent stepping back, siblings buying each other out, or a sale between related companies that the ATO may revisit years later. We give those owners a signed, defensible report at a fee a private business can justify, and the certified valuer who signs it answers for it, before the State Revenue Office of Tasmania, the ATO or the Supreme Court of Tasmania.

Why Tasmanian Owners and Their Advisers Come to Us

Certified Valuers Working Across Tasmania

Tasmania had 45,094 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026, a net increase of 850 (1.9%) over 2025 to 2026 (Source: ABS, Counts of Australian Businesses, July 2022 to June 2026, released 18 August 2026). We act for owners among them from North Hobart and Moonah to Bellerive, Kingston and the Huon Valley, by video call and phone, and we write to what Part 19 of the Supreme Court Rules 2000 asks of an expert.

Built to Survive a Second Opinion

We follow APES 225 and the International Valuation Standards, and a certified valuer signs every report. The working runs in order from the financial statements to the final figure, so a bank, the ATO, a judge or an opposing expert can check each link.

Signed Reports From Seven Business Days

When your records are complete, a Summary or Detailed report follows from seven business days, set out in the form the ATO, ASIC, the Federal Circuit and Family Court and lenders expect to receive.

One Report Matched to Each Purpose: Sale, Tax, Audit & SMSF

Selling a restaurant near Salamanca Place, claiming the Division 152 small business CGT concessions, giving an auditor an AASB 13 fair value, or valuing business premises in Glenorchy held by your SMSF: one conversation settles which report you need.

A Closing Call That Explains the Figure

Each engagement ends with a call that walks through how the income, market and asset approaches worked on your numbers, so you can explain the result to a partner, a buyer or the next generation.

Values the ATO and the State Revenue Office of Tasmania Can Test

Market values for CGT events and Division 7A loans, landholder duty and transfer duty under the Duties Act 2001 (Tas), assets moving into an SMSF from a related party, and a clear answer when an auditor asks how the figure was reached.

Certified Valuation Reports From Seven Business Days

Every report is signed by a credentialed certified valuer and built to withstand ATO, ASIC, court and bank scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

A signed opinion of what a business, or a share of one, is worth at a stated date, given by someone with no stake in the result. The valuer restates the accounts to show the earnings a new owner could expect, tests them through the income, market and asset approaches that fit, and reconciles the outcomes into a figure or range that can be defended.
Most private Tasmanian companies are valued by capitalising future maintainable earnings. Discounted cash flow takes the lead when earnings are about to shift, such as a tour operator adding capacity or a builder finishing its largest job. Comparable sales and listed multiples supply the market check, adjusted net assets suits holding entities and plant-heavy firms, and rules of thumb are only ever a sense-check.
Yes, when the figure will be examined by someone who would prefer a different one: the Supreme Court of Tasmania, the Federal Circuit and Family Court, the ATO, the State Revenue Office of Tasmania, a lender, or the other side's expert in a dispute between owners or spouses. If you only want a private sense of the figure first, an Indicative valuation does the job. It is intended for internal decision-making and is not a certified opinion for third parties.
Often. A fee connected with earning assessable income may be deductible, and a fee connected with a CGT event may instead form part of the cost base. Which applies depends on why you commissioned the report, so confirm the treatment with your tax adviser.
Usually, when other people will read the figure but are unlikely to contest it: a sale, a new partner buying in, an employee share scheme, a loan application or an SMSF audit. The report is certified and signed, and it shows which approaches were used and how the conclusion follows from them.
APES 225 Valuation Services is the professional standard the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board sets for members who value businesses in Australia. It governs how an engagement is scoped, how the work is documented and what the report must contain. Each Summary and Detailed report we sign is a Valuation Engagement under APES 225.
A free first call fixes the purpose, the valuation date and the report type. From there we collect your records, restate and analyse the accounts, apply the approaches suited to the business, and deliver the signed report on a closing call that explains each step behind the figure.
APES 225 sets the professional rules, and the International Valuation Standards issued by the IVSC set the method. When a tax result turns on the figure, the ATO's market valuation guidelines apply as well. Every certified report we issue names the standards it was prepared under.
The valuer who signs our reports holds the CFA, ABV and CBV designations, backed by more than 15 years of valuation, transaction and expert witness work. Every report is reviewed and signed by a certified valuer prepared to defend it before it goes to you.
A written opinion signed by a credentialed valuer under APES 225. It records the purpose, the standard of value, the evidence used, each adjustment and the reasoning, so a court, the ATO, a lender or the other side of a deal can rely on it without redoing the work.
Start by telling the valuer who signed it what concerns you. If a fact or figure we relied on was wrong, we correct it and reissue the report at no cost. We will not move a conclusion towards the result someone would prefer, because a report that bends is worth nothing once it is tested.
Yes. We act for owners across greater Hobart and the rest of the state: Glenorchy and Moonah, Bellerive, Rosny Park and Cambridge, Kingston and the Huon Valley, New Norfolk and the Derwent Valley, and the north and north-west. Consultations run by video call and phone and records are exchanged securely, so where you trade does not change how the work runs.
